Twelve years after the land was purchased — through lawsuits, vandalism and a pandemic — the grounds are ready. What remains is the building where our community will wash, shroud and pray over its loved ones.

With the construction contract signed, the association opened a LaunchGood campaign to fund the masjid and burial washing (ghusl) center — the final major phase before the cemetery can begin serving families.
Despite years of challenges and lawsuits, Phase 1 was finished and paid for with $1.4 million contributed by the Muslim community: about five acres of prepared burial grounds with nearly 5,000 lots, internal roads, paved parking, stormwater management and hundreds of evergreen trees planted as a natural boundary.
After a decade of delays, the community broke ground in Castle Rock Township. The ceremony was covered by KSTP, WCCO/CBS, KARE 11, FOX 9 and Sahan Journal.
Castle Rock Township granted Conditional Use Permit 2022-0002, allowing the cemetery together with ghusl (ritual washing) and prayer facilities on the land.
The community bought 72 acres of farmland at 1120 220th Street West in Castle Rock Township — and paid for it in full.
Once the Masjid & Ghusl Center is complete, the cemetery can begin serving Muslim families across Minnesota.

Muslims have lived in Minnesota for more than 30 years and our numbers keep growing — immigrants from about 40 nations now call the Twin Cities home. Yet until now we have buried our dead in extensions of existing cemeteries, or shipped our loved ones back to the countries we came from.
Al-Maghfirah Cemetery was established to give Minnesota’s Muslims what every community deserves: the fundamental dignity of burying our dead in accordance with our own rites, on land that is ours. The association is a nonprofit, tax-exempt cemetery, and every dollar comes from the community.
Al-Maghfirah is exclusively for Muslims. Burial practices and land use follow the teachings of Islam and the consensus of the major schools of thought.
Bought in 2014 and fully paid for, the land in Castle Rock Township will serve generations of Minnesota Muslims — for 100 years and beyond.
The township’s conditional use permit allows a cemetery with on-site ghusl (washing) and prayer facilities, in compliance with state and religious requirements.
Phase 2 adds a ghusl facility, prayer area, community hall and service offices — everything needed to care for the deceased with dignity.
Internal roads, paved parking and stormwater management were finished in Phase 1, ready for funeral services and gatherings.
Muslims from about 40 nations call the Twin Cities home. Every road, tree and burial lot here has been funded by the Ummah — with no other source of income.
